About Dog Obedience and Rally
Canine obedience provides the groundwork for all dog sports. If you want to play safely with your dog, then your dog will need some obedience. Regular obedience practice creates a shared language and a deeper relationship between you and your dog. It teaches your dog to look to you for guidance and prepares you to be an effective canine communicator and leader.
The Santa Barbara Flyers Obedience Group meets weekly to learn and practice obedience and Rally exercises. Some participants come to practice sessions to learn and master the skills necessary for American Kennel Club (AKC) obedience trials or Rally competition. Others just want to deepen their canine-human relationship and keep their dog mentally and physically acute. You and your dog may join the Santa Barbara Flyers advanced obedience practice sessions if your dog meets the following requirements:
Our practice sessions include heeling drills and loose-leash walking exercises. We start with heeling and responding to commands called-out by the instructor, such as sit, down, call your dog to front, about turn, etc... Then we practice figure-eights (allows the dog to get used to turning while heeling), stand for exam (gets the dog used to being touched by others), recall (gets the dog used to staying and coming in a controlled manner when called), sit-stay and down-stay (requires the dog to remain calm for at least a minute).
The Santa Barbara Flyers utilize training methods with positive reinforcement and lots of treats and verbal praise. The dogs are encouraged and praised for exhibiting desired behaviors. Standard training gear for a Santa Barbara Flyers obedience practice session includes the following:
In Rally Obedience, the dog/handler team navigates a set course with various signage along the way that describes exercises for you and your dog to perform. Rally was designed to be less formal than standard obedience. In Rally competition, you can talk to your dog and make hand motions to encourage a desired behavior. Rally can be a nice gateway for those who wish to continue on to more formal obedience training and competition. The Santa Barbara Flyers offer occasional Rally training and practice sessions.
Dog obedience provides the building blocks necessary for other dog sports. Obedience is fun and builds a close bond between you and your dog! The Santa Barbara Flyers are serious about training, but we also like to keep things relaxed and enjoyable.
